Weathermen warn of storm, flood threats

The extremely hot weather brings along heavy rain, as well as hailstorms. The Hydro-meteorology State Office warns about western cold winds coming in on Thursday, June 12, across a large part of Moldova’s territory, bringing along heavy showers, hailstorms and strong winds of 18-23 m/s. Some districts, in particular, the northern part of the country will be affected by heavy showers. The weather will remain hot. The high day temperature will reach +33 degrees Celsius or higher. Hydrologists also suggest that due to rainfalls, in the Northern part of the country, the water levels in rivers and streams might increase by 0.5-1.0m, while floods are expected to hit agricultural fields in the period July 12-13. These might lead to increased and heavy flooding of slopes and risk prone areas, especially in villages situated in valleys and inhabited areas situated on lower ground levels. Economic entities in charge of reserve lakes and ponds should ensure the suitability of dams and barrages. Hydrologists are warning about the bad condition of hydro-technical facilities and about the possibility of such weather conditions to lead to the breakage and destruction of dams.
