We will convince people to vote ‘against’ in referendum, Igor Dodon

The chairman of the Party of Socialists of Moldova (PSRM) Igor Dodon said that if the leaders of the ruling alliance decide to hold a constitutional referendum and the voter turnout threshold is removed, the Socialists will make effort to convince the people to vote ‘against’ in the plebiscite, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the program “Fabrica” on Publika TV, Igor Dodon said the President can be elected in Parliament by the votes of the MPs. “There are two ways of overcoming the political crisis – electing the head of state in Parliament or holding early legislative elections. There are no other possibilities. Electing an apolitical candidate is the only solution,” said the Socialist. He also said that the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu wants to be a Speaker and is not able to negotiate. “The Communists count on Ghimpu’s inability to negotiate. The early elections are their only chance. The Liberal leader should admit that she is interested only in posts, not in promoting the state interests. On November 4, 2011 (when he left the PCRM together with another two lawmakers – e.n.), we took an enormous risk, but did not ask for posts and do not ask for them now,” said the Socialists’ leader. He proposed that the next negotiations between him and the leaders of the ruling alliance should be broadcast live so that the people see what everybody wants. Igor Dodon stressed that if the procedure for electing the head of state is not initiated within ten days, the Socialists will start preparations for early elections. “We must agree the date of the presidential elections on February 16. After this problem is solved, we can start amending the Constitution,” he stated. The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration earlier announced that a constitutional referendum will be held to amend the Constitution so that the procedure for electing the head of state is unlocked. According to them, the constitutional amendment proposal will be presented by February 16, when the spring-summer session of Parliament is set to start.
