We should speak more about domestic violence, Premier

More attention should be devoted to domestic violence and we should speak more about this problem and solutions to prevent and combat this phenomenon should be looked for, said Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, who today visited the Center for the Rehabilitation of Female Survivors of Violence that was opened in the Autonomous Territorial Unit (ATU) of Gagauzia in 2020, IPN reports. “We must become more actively involved so as to protect those who are in difficulty and to offer them all the support they need,” stated the Premier, being quoted in a press release.

The center has ten employees and offers social services, consultancy and accommodation. During a year, 58 women benefitted from assistance there, but in the recent past the institution also welcomed over 100 refugees. The center can accommodate up to 20 persons simultaneously: women and children who are offered separate rooms outfitted with all the necessary things. The center also has a place for spending the leisure time and a playing room for children. It was also adjusted for persons with disabilities. The first floor of the building houses a community center intended for women and men from disadvantaged groups and persons who need counseling or support.

To stage awareness-raising activities, a mobile unit of the center travels to localities in ATU Gagauzia and offers assistance to tens of persons in preventing and combating domestic violence and in the employment of women from disadvantaged groups.

Premier Gavrilița said the extension of the services provided at the center is important also in the context of the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.

According to the deputy chairwoman of the Executive Committee of ATU Gagauzia Olesea Tanasoglo, the opening of the center enables to provide assistance to all the women who need this.

UNDP, with the assistance of the Republic of Korea, allocated US$90,000 for renovating the building, creating the infrastructure and constituting multidisciplinary teams for providing services.
