We had neither childhood, nor youth and now make effort to survive, pensioners
The low pensions, high prices, expensive medications and the authorities' indifference are only some of the matters about which pensioners complained in a meeting on March 17. The event organized by the Chisinau Veterans' Council centered upon the social protection of pensioners. The pensioners said they had neither childhood, nor youth and now have to economize in order to survive, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I retired two years ago. I had a son and a daughter. My daughter was ill and died, while my son was killed in a road accident. My husband worked in the construction sector all his life and is now paralyzed. I receive a pension of 1,200 lei. I have to pay 1,400 lei for the heat consumed in February. Besides, I have to pay for the electricity, gas, water. I cannot manage on my pension,” said Chisinau pensioner Nina Socolenco. The woman said her clothes are about 20 years old and she cannot purchase many food products as a lot of money goes on drugs for her husband.
Another pensioner, Elena Carpova said she has a pension of 800 lei and can hardly manage on it. “I economize on everything I can and sometimes eat only bread. We live in poverty, but the authorities do not care. They want us to die,” she said.
Nina Salova, head of the Rascani veterans organization, said the situation of the pensioners worsens every day, but the administration does nothing to help them. On the contrary, they raise the prices, not yet the pensions.
Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Vadim Pistrinciuc said that besides pensions the pensioners receive compensations for public utilities from the central and local public administration. According to him, this year they will take additional measures to support the pensioners. He also said that there will be provided aid depending on elderly people's needs and for emergencies.
The meeting was attended by over 400 pensioners.
