We came home, not on visit, Vlad Filat

“Though time has passed since the Moldovan and Romanian officials crossed the border between the two states, we came home, not on visit and want to become part of the European family as soon as possible. We are Europeans and have this right,” Prime Minister Vlad Filat said at a meeting with his Romanian counterpart Emil Boc, during which they signed three bilateral documents, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Bucharest reports. Vlat Filat told the reporters that he had special feelings when he crossed the Prut, after a period during which the bilateral relations had been difficult, owing to the Communists Party. Now they will become normal and the signing of the three agreements between Moldova and Romania on November 13 is a proof of this, he said. “Chisinau knows the past, assumes the present and is thinking about the future,” Vlad Filat said. He assured the Romanian authorities that he will be a correct and responsible partner. The Convention on Small-Scale Border Traffic establishes a favorable regime for the citizens living in the border areas on both banks of the Prut. The Moldovan citizens living in the settlements located 30 km (in some cases 50 km) of the border will travel visa free within the similar area situated in Romania, using small-scale traffic permits and the passport. The permits will be valid for 2 to 5 years. According to Vlad Filat, this is a very important first step towards Moldova’s integration into the EU. The agreement covers about 40% of Moldova’s population. The agreement on the crossing points located on the Moldovan-Romanian border regulates the opening methods, the change of the purpose and category of the units transport, the work program, etc. The third document is a protocol to amend the agreement on reciprocal promotion and protection of investments signed in Bucharest on August 14, 1992. The amendments were introduced because the text of the signed agreement contained stipulations that ran counter to the EU laws. “Many things have been said, but not much done,” Vlad Filat said. “Today we start to take actions in the interests of the Moldovan people.” Romanian’s acting Prime Minister Emil Boc assured the Moldovan officials that no matter who wins the presidential elections, Moldova will have in Bucharest a good friend that will support it in its European integration efforts.
