We are committed to signing Association Agreement with Moldova, Štefan Füle

The EU is further committed to signing the Association Agreement with the EU, which is a model for modernizing Moldova. It’s good that the initialed accord’s text was translated into Romanian and Russian as all the people, including those from Transnistria, will be able to familiarize themselves with it, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle said in a press briefing at the end of his first visit to Moldova this year, IPN reports.

“I encourage everyone to read the agreement so as to see its benefits and the opportunities of closer cooperation with the EU. The relations between the European Union and Moldova develop at an accelerated speed. In 2013, there were taken a series of measures that contributed to the development of the bilateral relations: we initialed the Association Agreement; raised the quotas for the Moldovan wine, and initiated the process of abolishing the visa requirements for Moldovans. It is important to maintain such dynamics,” said the European official.

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said that besides the signing of the Association Agreement this year, they also plan to put into operation the first interconnection element in the energy sector. “We have very important objectives in front of us. We already started the discussions on several key elements and I’m convinced that together we will agree what to do to be ready to fully benefit from the accord’s provisions and advantages when it is signed and ratified in Parliament,” he stated.

European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos underlined that he was pleased to see the great interest that the ministerial conference that they attended aroused among the EU member states. “There were 13 or 14 high-ranking representatives, ministers or state secretaries of the EU member states attending. This shows the European Commission’s clear commitment to support Moldova and other Eastern Partnership countries on the path to the EU,” he said.

The two European commissioners cane to Chisinau to take part in the Eastern Partnership Ministerial Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development.
