The strong currents, thermal shock caused by the cold water and alcohol consumption are the most frequent causes of death by drowning. 90% of the drowned persons are men, who go swimming while under the influence, Liliana Puscasu said. Eighty-five persons, including 17 children, have drowned in Moldova this year.
