Watchdog agency fines broadcasters for bias in campaign coverage

A number of TV channels have been fined by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) for breaking legal standards in covering the recent parliamentary race, after a BCC report monitoring the last week of the campaign showed that most of the 13 monitored broadcasters favored certain electoral competitors, IPN reports.

BCC chairman Dinu Ciocan said that four channels with nationwide coverage – Prime, Canal 2, Canal 3 and Publika TV - “went totally out of line” favoring one particular party and were fined the maximum amount of 5,400 lei, and so was Euro TV for favoring another party. Similar fines were imposed on Jurnal TV and Accent TV, but for the opposite reason: they were found to be at fault of painting certain parties only in dark colors. The channels N4 and TV7 got lesser fines, of 1,800 lei.

“I congratulate the channel PRO TV Chisinau for remaining objective and unbiased throughout the election season. This is also partially true for the public channel Moldova 1, which still favored two electoral competitors in the last week”, said BCC member Marian Pocaznoi. For this violation, Moldova 1 got away with a formal warning.
