Waste disposal charges in Chisinau expected to double
The local authorities intend to double the domestic refuse quotas in the municipality of Chisinau and this will lead to the doubling in the waste disposal charges collected by the “Motorsanitation” Division. The given issue will be discussed at the meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) on November 22.
Currently, the quota for a resident of a block of flats is one cubic metre a year, while the monthly charge is 2.8 lei. If CMC approves the doubling in the domestic refuse quota, the monthly payment for collecting the refuse will be 5.6 lei per person.
Under the draft decision of the CMC, the quota for the residents of private houses will be four cubic metres, as against two at present, and the monthly charge will be 11.2 lei or by 5.6 lei higher.
The current domestic refuse quota has been used since 1987. Since then, the structure of household refuse has considerably changed. There appeared new packages, tetrapacks, PET bottles and as a result the volume of domestic waste increases by 10 to 20% a year. The relevant municipal services say that each day they take out of the town by 1,000 cubic metres more than planned.
The management of “Motorsanitation” considers that the new charge will enable to purchase the vehicles needed to transport the rubbish and to install an optimal number of rubbish bins for the housing sector. In such a way, the sanitary conditions in apartment buildings’ refuse rooms and at waste accumulation grounds will improve.
Fifteen refuse trucks worth 12 mln lei and over 2,000 bins worth about 7 mln lei must be purchased to quickly and effectively transport the rubbish out of Chisinau.
