War veterans will hold a protest rally in front of the Government Building on September 11. In a news conference hosted by IPN, the chairman of the Transnistrian Refugees’ Movement Anatolie Bîzgu urged all the Moldovan citizens who want to support the fight for the rights of war veterans to join the event. He read a statement calling for the resignation of Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu and the Prime Minister's adviser on veterans’ issues Constantin Covrig for the reason that they did not fulfill the promises and did not solve the problems of war veterans.
“We make a public appeal to war veterans, supporters of war veterans, farmers, carriers, civil society and to all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who want to support us. On September 11, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., when we will mount a protest next to the Building of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, on the Great National Assembly Square, please come out to fight for our rights,” urged Anatolie Bîzgu.
The chairman of the Transnistrian Refugees’ Movement said that the war veterans are currently facing a number of problems and all the attempts to build a dialogue with the authorities to solve them fail. They made numerous requests to introduce monthly allowances for war widows and their family members in the amounts requested by the beneficiaries, but this topic remained at the level of discussions. There was no reaction to the request to execute the ECtHR decisions and court decisions on the provision of war veterans with housing.
Anatolie Bîzgu asked to work out and approve the action plan “Memory. Honor. Respect” and to also adopt the draft law on the recalculation of pensions of employees of internal affairs bodies, to create a governmental body, the Office for Veterans’ Relations, and to introduce allowances for war widows and/or their family members in the amount of 50% of the national minimum salary. He also requested information on the distribution of housing in the apartment block located on Alba-Iulia St in the capital city, intended for Chernobyl liquidators.
The head of the Transnistrian Refugees’ Movement called on the state authorities and institutions responsible for war veterans’ issues to include in draft law No. 194 on veterans, which was given a first reading by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the requested benefits, such as the right to free travel by all means of urban passenger transport and rail transport, free sanatorium treatment tickets for war veterans in rehabilitation centers of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection and other state institutions of this type.
Viorel Chistol, veteran of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, of “Fulger” Special Purpose Police Brigade, said that the current government should start to act to solve the problems faced by war veterans.
