Several associations of war veterans reiterate their requests to the authorities to increase pensions and financial aid for veterans’ families. Otherwise, they intend to stage protests in a few months. In a press conference, Anatolie Bîzgu, the president of the Transnistrian Refugee Movement, said that the demands submitted so far have been ignored, and the veterans are struggling more and more.

Anatolie Bîzgu noted that the veterans are disappointed by the government’s attitude. As a result of combat actions to defend the integrity and independence of the country in 1992, policemen, soldiers and civilians have died. Others kept their lives but were left with disabilities. Entire families were displaced and forced to take refuge on the right bank of the Nistru. “The authorities have the responsibility to support the veterans, to support these families who still need the social protection of the state”.

“I submitted several letters to the Parliament, the Government, the President of Moldova through which I requested, first of all, to allocate an allowance, call it as they wish, a pension for descendants, primarily to the families of those who have fallen on the battlefield. Let’s restore justice. So far zero actions. I have requested that the pensions/allowances for war invalids, disabled people be increased - zero action, no results. And we requested other measures to improve the social protection of war veterans, as well”, said the president of the Movement, stating that if the state authorities do not take concrete actions to solve the problems of war veterans, they will have to take to the street.

Valentin Țapeș, a veteran, said that the current Law on veterans refers to all categories of veterans. Lacking adequate support from the authorities, an initiative group developed a draft project specifically targeting war veterans. When developing the project, the law of Ukraine and Romania was consulted, as well as the regulations that apply in the Transnistrian region. The project provides facilities for war veterans, both social and financial.
