Vulnerability of Moldovan education system

The education system of Moldova does not appropriately satisfy the market needs and continues to train young people in areas where there are enough specialists and where they cannot find a job. The issue was discussed in a meeting with young specialists, which centered on the adjustment of the education system to the needs of the business community, IPN reports.

Jurist Ruslan Uskov said that in all the states education lags behind and cannot cope with the labor market demand. This is somehow normal as the implementation of reforms is a long-lasting process. In Moldova yet, the educating system is tens of years behind the labor market.

“In order to work as a computer operator at a bank and be able to complete two tables, the person needs to study economy for five years. The young people waste five years on higher education. For gaining such knowledge, it’s enough to attend professional formation courses during 2-3 months. It’s more effective. The person can swiftly change the area of activity if there are too many specialists on a certain segment of the labor market,” said the jurist.

Ruslan Uskov also said that Moldova is one of the largest exporters of labor force, while the migrants bring to the state budget a considerably higher income than that earned from the export of wine, apples, etc. Therefore, the state should invest in the training of specialists who are in demand abroad, especially in builders, so that they have a diploma that is recognized in the host country. This will enable them to get a much higher salary and, as a result, the remittances will be higher.

The jurist believes that a qualification program intended for those who work abroad is needed. “We must do this so as not to fail as a state. Other European states, which are now much more developed that Moldova, used the remittances sent by the migrants to develop the country. Moldova should follow this example,” stated Ruslan Uskov.

He added that the Moldovans have a mentality program related to higher education as they consider that the higher education will ensure a highly-paid job. But this is not so.
