Votes cast for Chisinau Council to be recounted

The Chisinau Court of Appeals Friday ordered a recount of the votes given to the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), following a challenge filed by the Liberal Party, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Liberal Party demanded that the votes be recounted, invoking irregularities. Earlier this week, the Centru district court rejected the Liberals’ application, arguing that there was not enough evidence. Asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the Court of Appeals’ decision, the Communist Party’s jurist Sergiu Sarbu said that it is a political decision. “It is a fully political decision because they did not have new proofs and arguments. The challenge was examined two hours after it was lodged and this is inadmissible,” he stated. The jurist also said that the Court of Appeals’ decision is an attempt to denigrate the Communist Party and it is not excluded that the Liberal Party will lose votes after the recount. He stressed that the PCRM will involve observers in the recount process. According to the voting reports of the June 5 local elections, the PCRM should hold 26 seats of councilor on the CMC, the PL – 17 seats, the PLDM – seven seats, while the PDM – one seat. [UPDATE] Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the president of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan said the vote recount is performed within seven days of the day the court passes a definitive and irrevocable decision.
