Voronin urges Lupu to dissolve Parliament

The chairman of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin sent an open letter to Acting President Marian Lupu, demanding that he immediately dissolve Parliament and set the date of early parliamentary elections, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vladimir Voronin said the legislative body could not elect the head of state within the set timeframe. “The legislature automatically lost its powers and became illegal. In order to maintain peace and harmony in the country, I urge you to immediately dissolve Parliament, according to the legal procedures, and to fix the date of early legislative elections,” wrote the Communist leader. He reiterated that the Communist Party during 2011 put forward a number of proposals for overcoming the political crisis, but the parliamentary majority took none of them into account. “The lack of appropriate perception of the situation on the part of the ruling alliance and the continuation of the attempts to preserve the current government undoubtedly represent one of the most serious crimes committed before the people – usurpation of power. The key to normalizing the political situation and the instrument for partially expiating your blame for the created situation is in your hands,” reads the letter. The two attempts to elect the President made in 2011 failed. No presidential candidate was registered for the first elections, while in the second elections the only candidate did not poll the necessary number of votes. The new elections set were cancelled following a decision passed by the Constitutional Court. The ruling alliance announced that a constitutional referendum will be held in April to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state.
