Voronin: This is a motion to eliminate us from the electoral arena

The head of the Communists’ Party (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin asked Parliament to vote against a Liberal motion aiming to condemn totalitarian Communism and its symbols. “Have some decency, don’t lay under such politics. Reject all this nonsense”, declared Voronin in Parliament. The PCRM leader said he would rather endorse a motion on the current situation in Moldova as the country had fallen into a state of “miserable poverty”. “This is a bill meant to eliminate us from the political arena. You are late 22 years. People know us for our deeds and not for demagogy”, stated Vladimir Voronin. In his speeches, Communist MP Sergiu Sarbu said that no one had ever proven that Communist symbols undermined the security of a democratic regime. His party fellow Oleg Reidman added that Communism reduced illiteracy and brought only good things and people shouldn’t give up on their parents who lived in that period. “We don’t need this motion. This path isn’t constructive and has no future”, he said. The Liberal group proposed the condemnation of the totalitarian Communist regime in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, which committed crimes against humanity, and of the actions of all those who contributed to these crimes. The measure forbids the use for political purposes of the Communist totalitarian regime’s symbols, that is the hammer and the sickle, and of any other support with these symbols.
