Voronin tells PACE President that government modifies laws according to party interests

The chairman of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin sent a letter to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, describing the political situation in Moldova. The opposition’s head says the government amends the legislation according to party interests, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“During over two years, the three parliamentary parties have continuously modified the laws according to the immediate and narrow party interests, openly defying not only the international and European practices, but also the common sense. In the period, the ruling alliance did not manage to elect the head of state, rejecting from the start all the opposition’s constructive initiatives aimed at unlocking the situation,” reads the letter.
Vladimir Voronin said the current administration intends to organize a new referendum to amend the Constitution, but this is an illegal and unconstitutional act. “A referendum on this topic was held last September. Under the legislation, a new referendum on the same subject can be held once in two years. Moreover, the supreme law does not envision modifying the Constitution by referendum, only in Parliament. The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and OSCE/ODIHR pronounced on the issue in 2010,” he stated.
The Communist leader also said that Moldova should be continuously monitored by the Council of Europe. “The current situation in the country, the ignoring of the Constitution, the separation of the powers in the state, the usurpation of the power, the serious shortcomings in the functioning of the democratic institutions require that the PACE Monitoring Committee and the co-rapporteurs for Moldova become involved,” said Vladimir Voronin.
The Alliance for European Integration announced that a constitutional referendum will be held in April at the latest to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state.
