Voronin says Popusoi's immunity is electoral subject
Former President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin, the chairman of the Communists Party (PCRM), said the intention to withdraw the parliamentary immunity of MP Anatolie Popusoi is an electoral subject, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Vladimir Voronin stressed it is an attempt to discredit the PCRM before the elections.
The Parliament Thursday is to consider withdrawing the parliamentary immunity of Anatolie Popusoi at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office. The former head of the state-run agency “Moldsilva” could be investigated for fraudulently managing over 80 million lei when selling several hundred hectares of wooded land to Vladimir Voronin. The Communist leader denies owing wooded land. He said he rents several hectares.
The Parliament's regulations say the withdrawal of the immunity is put to secret vote. The decision is taken by the vote of a simple majority of MPs. The proposal is put to the vote only if the parliamentary commission for appointments and immunities rules there are reasons for withdrawing the immunity.
Anatolie Popusoi does not attend the sitting. According to Vladimir Voronin, he is absent on health grounds. Popusoi entered the legislature on the Communist ticket, but is not a member of the PCRM, as Voronin said.
