Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin slashed the European Union for its support to the governing Alliance for European Integration, claiming that the support is offered for other reasons than those stated, and namely in reward for the current government's anti-communist and anti-Russian attitudes, Info-Prim Neo reports. Speaking at a Press Club event on Friday, March 25, Voronin said the EU support was due to “the anti-communist policy which is, regretfully, promoted in many European Union countries, including within the European Union structures. Anyone can be in government and anything can happen in Moldova as long as Communists are kept from gaining power back in Moldova. This explains all these loans, grants, all this support”. “And all the praise addressed today to the current government on the achievements made with European integration is in fact told for other reasons and for other achievements. First of all, it's for their political loyalty, for their anti-Russian policy and for their provincial mediocrity”, declared Vladimir Voronin. When asked about the Communist Party's own declared pro-European orientation, considering all the “anti-communism” within the EU, Vladimir Voronin answered: “Is there another direction we can go?” He said that during eight years of Communist government Moldova had sought closeness both with the EU and the CIS, depending on the current interests of the country.
