Voronin: Communists won't comply with hammer-and-sickle ban

Communist leader Vladimir Voronin has told reporters that his party will not comply with the recently adopted law which prohibits the use of communist symbols for political purposes. “Parliament has no right to condemn, because it is a legislative body, and not a prosecution service or court of law”, he argued. Voronin further stated that when the Moldovan Party of Communists was registered in October 1993, it expressly disclaimed any association or allegiance with the totalitarian communist regime. “What the ruling Alliance is doing is mere retaliation. All they are capable of is doing stupid things”. The law banning communist symbols takes effect on October 1. An appeal by the Communist Party against the measure is now pending before the Constitutional Court.
