Voronin asks Czech Premier to transmit Moldovan authorities’ concern over Romania’s position to European organizations

Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin provided explanations about the events that happened after the elections to the outgoing Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek and asked him to transmit the Moldovan authorities’ concern over Romania’s position on the situation in Moldova to the European organizations. For his part, Topolanek urged the authorities and the Opposition to hold talks and voiced hope that the Moldovan-Romanian relations will return to normality, Info-Prim Neo reports. At a joint news conference in Chisinau, Vladimir Voronin said that he asked Topolanek to inform the European organizations that Moldova considers it humiliating to obtain access to the European Union through the neighboring country, Romania”. “Moldova is ready to shift to the regime of free movement within the EU. President Traian Basescu’s statement about 4 million Romanian people that live in Moldova is very dangerous for us and this thing should concern the European Union,” Voronin said. According to Voronin, the Czech Premier recommended the Moldovan authorities to start looking for a national compromise over the divergences that led to conflicts. The head of state stressed that these measures are good and should be put into practice immediately. “I don’t want to hide that the crisis situation in Moldova worries the EU. We follow attentively the situation and will continue to follow it,” Mirek Topolanek said. “We, the UE, are ready to actively contribute to the remedying of the situation within a legal framework,” he added. Speaking about the Moldovan-Romanian relations, he said: “I hope that together we will manage to normalize the relations between the two countries.” During his one-day visit to Chisinau, the Czech official had meetings with the Moldovan senior authorities and representatives of the Opposition and nongovernmental organizations. “Everyone assesses the events differently. For me, it is worrying that will to start the dialogue exists only at verbal level,” Topolanek said. “At all the meetings, I highlighted the means that can help stabilize the situation: the dialogue, the guaranteed functioning of the state of law, the insurance and observance of the human rights and fundamental freedoms, stopping of the attacks and violence, creation of an investigation commission that would include representatives of the Opposition and the international organizations, free access to mass media.” Mirek Topolanek assured he will present all the information collected in Chisinau at the Summit of the EU Foreign Ministers set to take place on April 27-28. Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the presidency of the European Union, has paid a one-day visit to Chisinau to familiarize himself with the situation in Moldova following the April 5 parliamentary elections.
