Volunteers of Nistru war commemorate comrades in central Chisinau

Tens of volunteers have come to the Central Park of Chisinau “Stephan the Great” to commemorate the comrades killed in battles in Bender on June 19, 20 and 21, 1992. The head of the National Council of Volunteers Union Sergiu Caracai has told IPN that such meetings are held in a number of settlements. The event started at 10am and will last for several hours.

“On June 19, we set free police officers who remained blocked in Bender. We then managed to help the citizens who suffered because of the Russian soldiers. Many of our comrades lost their lives in the battles in Bender, but the authorities didn’t keep a record of the victims and now only we remember them,” stated Sergiu Caracai.

The Volunteers Union staged a commemoration event. The program includes patriotic songs and discussions about patriotism. “Then, in 1992, there was fanatic patriotism. Now we do not see something like this. The authorities do nothing to support us. We asked for a law on volunteering, but it wasn’t adopted. We fought there, but nobody knows,” said Sergiu Caracai.

Over the next few days, similar meetings will be also staged in other settlements. Sergiu Caracai said the volunteers will meet every two weeks to discuss the current situation. “Now we have the impression that the country goes towards destruction,” he stated.

According to the Volunteers Union, there are now about 12,700 volunteers who took part in the 1992 Nistru war in Moldova.
