Voluntary compliance of taxpayers is at core of tax administration reform

The number of inspections carried out at companies over the last three months fell from 1,110 in the corresponding period last year to 640. The effectiveness of the inspections increased, the head of the State Main Tax Inspectorate Ion Prisacaru told a news conference held on August 23, on the occasion of 100 days of his appointment to the post, IPN reports.

According to Ion Prisacaru, emphasis was put on the information and education of taxpayers with a view to increasing the number of those who voluntarily comply with the tax legislation. Effort is made to improve the quality of the services provided for the taxpayers and to reduce the costs of fulfilling the fiscal obligations by implementing new informational products. “A relationship based on the taxpayers’ respect and confidence and the improvement of the professionalism of the Tax Inspectorate’s employees and of their conduct will enable to change the attitude towards the tax authorities,” said Prisacaru.

He also said that the system of penalties was reviewed so that the punishment fits the seriousness of the offenses committed by the taxpayers. “Our slogan is: “Tax employees in the service of taxpayers”. We will thus stimulate the honest taxpayers who fulfill their fiscal obligations in an exemplary way. We will also use all the legal instruments to penalize the taxpayers that carry out illegal entrepreneurial activities,” stated the head of the State Main Tax Inspectorate.

During the first week of the campaign launched by the Inspectorate in concert with the police and the Ministry of the Interior with a view to combating the illegal passenger transportations services, there were imposed fines of 550,000 lei.
