Volume of freight and number of passengers increasing
The volume of freight and the number of passengers has increased slightly. The rail, road and air transport companies in February conveyed 403,900 tonnes of goods, up 32.9% from January and down 30.9% from last February. The distance covered by the goods in February was 177.6 million tonne-kilometer, by 35.3% more compared with January and 3.6% more compared with February last year, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the National Bureau of Statistics.
According to the quoted source, the mentioned companies in January-February this year transported 707,800 tonnes of goods or 70.9% of the volume conveyed in the corresponding period last year. The distance covered by the goods was 308.9 million tonne-kilometer or 99.8% of the volume recorded in the same period last year.
Compared with January-February 2009, the volume of freight transported by trains fell by 29.4%, while by road – by 26.8%. The distance covered by the goods conveyed by trains decreased by 32.2%. The fluvial companies did not work in January-February this year owing to the unfavorable weather conditions.
A number of 16.1 million passengers were transported by buses and minibuses in the period, a decrease of 1.1% compared with the corresponding period of 2009. The transport companies working in the municipality of Chisinau conveyed 59.9% of the total number of passengers, in the municipality of Balti - 9.4%, in the districts of Cahul – 6.5%, Orhei – 3.5%, Ungheni – 1.8%, Ialoveni – 1.7%, Straseni – 1.6%.
