A volume by Maria Sargun entitled “Great union of Romanians of 1918. Bibliographic contributions”, which contains over 3,000 bibliographical descriptions, was launched at the National Library on January 24, IPN reports.
According to the author, this is the first bibliography of the union that was compiled and edited in the Romanian area based on the collections of a number of libraries, namely the National Library, the Scientific Library of the Academy of Sciences, the Scientific Library of the National Archive, the Library of the National Museum of History and the Municipal Library “B.P Hasdeu”. Work on the volume lasted for almost a year. The research covered the chronological period of World War One and the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, where the union documents were recognized.
“We have rich literature that was included in this book. This literature has a different character. It was written in different periods starting with 1918, in different political regimes, and the event was respectively addressed from different viewpoints. We also have documentary literature of a high quality that enabled us to draw some evident conclusions,” stated Ion Negrei, coordinator of the work.
National Library director Elena Pintilei said the work is designed for history researchers and those interested in the union act, the truth about the evolution of events. “It is an exhaustive work that puts valuable materials of our libraries in the bibliographic and historical circuit,” stated Elena Pintilei.
The event involved Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova. “We must understand the old lessons of history, that the union means power,” said His Excellence Daniel Ioniță.
Andrei Chistol, secretary of state at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, said the event underlines the role that the National Library should play as an opinion shaper. “We continue to investigate and inform the public about the biggest accomplishment of our people, the Great Union,” he noted.
The volume was issued in 40 copies that will be kept at the National Library and other libraries.
