“Voievod” movement seeks dismissal of head of Galati customs post

The youth movement “Voievod” demands that the head of the Galati customs post be dismissed and that the Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau be recalled. The request was made after a 23-year-old Moldovan was injured at the Moldovan-Romanian border following an attempt to smuggle cigarettes and altercations with the customs and border authorities of Romania, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Government of Romania should apologize officially to the Moldovan people, especially the victim and his family,” says a statement signed by the organization’s head Nicolae Pascaru. The movement’s leader asks for how long shall the people tolerate such a behavior on the part of partner countries. “We are now shot at home. Do we have a ministry or a Government that can defend its people? Or our government is unable to ensure the security of the state and its people?” asked Nicolae Pascaru. According to Pascaru, after this case Romania does not deserve to form part of the Schengen area, as it is unable to deal with elementary incidents. The incident happened on January 15. The Moldovan young man presented himself at the Galati border crossing point. He refused to go through all the formalities as he had contraband cigarettes in his car and tried to return to Moldova. A policeman opened fire when he did not want to stop.
