Vocea Basarabiei Radio seeks apologies from PGO

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) on Wednesday announced it had quashed the criminal proceedings initiated in 2007 against the radio station “Vocea Basarabiei” /Voice of Bessarabia/ on charges of attempting to overthrow constitutional order in Moldova. The administration of the radio station says that it didn’t know anything about those proceedings and that it expects public apologies from the PGO, Info-Prim Neo reports. The PGO said in a press release the proceedings were started in December 2007 in response to a monitoring report issued by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) which found that the radio station had allowed itself “a series of attacks against the leaders of Moldova, against statehood, calls for the change of the constitutional order”, etc. Finally the PGO found that those actions “didn’t meet the elements of an offense”. Vocea Basarabiei director Veaceslav Tibuleac has told Info-Prim Neo he wasn’t aware of the existence of those proceedings. “This press release from the Prosecutor General’s Office is a spit in the face. It is after 2 years and 4 months that we learn about having been accused on such grave charges”, said Veaceslav Tibuleac. The director explained he knew only about an order issued by the PGO in 2007 instructing the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption to inspect the activity of the station. “We asked the prosecutors to tell us the reasons for that harassment but we received no answer. We weren’t summonsed to give any explanations. And if true, the BCC should have heard us at a public meeting”. “We consider that the PGO and the informer at the BCC should apologize to us. We also demand that the BCC publishes that informative note. If not, we’ll consider the BCC to be an accomplice of the Voronin regime”, declared Veaceslav Tibuleac.
