Vladimir Voronin willing to cooperate with investigation bodies in case of arrested ex-MP

Party switching affects not only the image of parties, but also the people’s confidence. The president of the Party of Communists (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin in a news conference commented on the arrest of former MPs who in 2015 left the party he leads. The Communist leader voiced hope that the investigation will make progress and noted that he is ready to cooperate with the responsible bodies, IPN reports.

Vladimir Voronin said yesterday’s arrest of the former party mates was unexpected. In 2015, when they left the PCRM, many statements were made, but no measures were taken. “We support and will cooperate with the investigation bodies in this problem if need be. We support the measures taken now by the given bodies. The issue should be ultimately clarified,” stated Vladimir Voronin.

The politician noted he does not rejoice at what is happening to “these personages”, but party switching should be brought to an end. “If they are to blame, they should answer before the law. They must say where they took this wealth from overnight if they assert that they didn’t betray the party,” said the Communist leader.

MP Elena Bodnarenco said she was also offered to leave the PCRM. Sergiu Sîrbu (one of the former MPs who is investigated for unjust enrichment, e.n.) also approached her right before the 14 MPs left the PCRM. Another offer was made to her shortly after that defection.

Five former MPs were arrested for 72 hours on February 2. These are: Sergiu Sîrbu, Violeta Ivanov, Vladimir Vitiuc, Anatolie Zagorodnyi and Artur Reshetnikov. They are investigated for unjust enrichment, being suspected of taking bribe for switching their parliamentary groups.

In December 2015, 14 MPs of the Party of Communists, among who was the leader of the party’s parliamentary group Violeta Ivanov, announced their defection from the group and the party and the creation of the Social-Democratic Party “For Moldova”. Later, a part of them joined the Democratic Party and the Pro Moldova parliamentary group led by Andrian Candu. Some of these MPs currently form part of Șor Party.
