The Constitutional Court judgment of 2016 concerning the direct election of the Head of State by the people is illegal as the judges had no right to interpret the supreme law this way. This mistake should be corrected now so that the President is elected by the MPs, as the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova provides, chairman of the Party of Communists (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin was quoted by IPN as saying in the RTR Moldova program “Friday with Anatolie Godea”.

“We are a parliamentary republic, according to the Constitution. (...) The Constitution was violated. The supreme law provides that the President is elected by Parliament. The Constitution was flouted by five members of the Constitutional Court, who didn’t have the right to modify the supreme law,” stated Vladimir Voronin.

The leader of the Communists avoided saying if he will run for a new tenure of President next year. He said yet the law does not ban the representative of an extraparliamentary party from running. It is too early to say if the Party of Communists will field a candidate for the office of President or not.

According to Vladimir Voronin, the PCRM is not in Parliament now because it is the only party that kept its classical form and that does not bribe the voters to enter the legislative body. The party does not have many mayors in settlements because it does not have financial resources.
