Vladimir Voronin tops rankings of post-Soviet politicians in Moldova

Moldova’s third President Vladimir Voronin, the leader of the Communist Party, heads the rankings of the top 10 post-Soviet politicians in Moldova. He is followed by Moldova’s second President Petru Lucinschi and MP Iurie Muntean, who is a member of the PCRM. The rankings were compiled by the Institute for Development and Social Initiative (IDIS) “Viitorul” within the study “How to get rid of post-Sovietism?”, Info-Prim Neo reports. The rankings also include former Speaker Eugenia Ostapciuc (4th), the chairman of the Democratic parliamentary group Dumitru Diacov (5th), and the head of the Social-Democratic Party Victor Selin (6th). The president of the Audit Office Serafim Urecheanu comes seventh, while ex-Premier Vasile Tarlev – eighth. Gagauz governor Mihail Formuzal takes the ninth position, while Communist lawmaker Artur Reshetnikov closes the rankings. The rankings were produced with the assistance of 36 experts who put grades to the Moldovan politicians, depending on how many actions showing post-Soviet mentality they took. The study covers three post-Soviet states - Moldova, Georgia, and Ukraine. In a news conference on February 8, the authors of the study for Moldova - IDIS “Viitorul” experts Leonid Litra and Cornel Ciurea – said they were surprised that no high-ranking official, including the head of state, the Premier, and the head of Parliament, entered the rankings. According to the questionnaires filled out by the 36 experts, the Democratic leader, Speaker Marian Lupu ranked 11th, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party - 22nd, while President Nicolae Timofti – 37th. Cornel Ciurea said that the experts filled out the questionnaires at the end of 2012, when the hunting tragedy in the Domneasca Forest was still unknown, and they didn’t see the reactions of the senior officials.
