Vladimir Voronin says Opposition parties have no future

The political parties that are now in Opposition do not have a future because they do not stick to ideological principles and do not serve the interests of the country, President Vladimir Voronin says. During a televised programme, the head of state said that the Opposition parties can be divided into three categories: parties that have their own or group interest, parties designed to promote certain businesses and, the most dangerous ones, parties constituted and financed from abroad. Asked with what party PCRM would ally if it did not obtain a majority vote in the 2009 elections, Vladimir Voronin said that he is against coalitions. According to him, the coalition partners strive for posts and not for the interests of the country. The voters must choose one party that will assume responsibility for the administration. Otherwise, there will be the same situation as now in the municipality of Chisinau. The president described the situation in the municipality as “national tragedy”. “They will destroy everything if we tolerate them during four years,” Vladimir Voronin said. The head of state did not give a clear answer as regards a possible change in the name of the Communist Party. However, he said that if PCRM changed its name, the brand could be used by someone else, who would easily poll 10-15% of the vote. In July 2007, Speaker Marian Lupu, member of PCRM, said that the party should be modernized by modifying the doctrine and the name. The next Congress of PCRM will take place in March 2008.
