The leader of the Communist Party (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin is against the direct election of the head of state, by the people’s vote. He provided relevant arguments in the program “Place for dialogue” on the public station Radio Moldova, IPN reports.

Vladimir Voronin said it is normal for the head of state to be elected by Parliament because the legislative body includes representatives of the people who chose particular parties. “These parties worked out electoral platforms and the people voted for them,” he stated.

To be more convincing, the Communist leader gave as example a statement by Joseph Stalin of 1936, by which the dictator opposed including the post of president of the USSR in the constitution of the Soviet Union, arguing the power belongs to the people. “I also believe that the power must belong to the people,” staid Vladimir Voronin.

He also said that he knows from his experience what power concentrated in the hands of a person means. If the head of state was not controlled by Parliament, it would be a disaster. “If Ghimpu or Lupu was elected to such a post with all the instruments in their hands, the country would be governed by clans with mafia interests,” stated the former head of state.

In the same program, Vladimir Voronin accused the current government coalition of corruption and appropriation, saying Parliament is not functional, while Prime Minister Iurie Leanca didn’t have the right to sign the Association Agreement with the EU because the accord wasn’t subject to parliamentary debates.
