The Communist Party did not put forward a candidate for the mayoral position for Chișinău City Hall, however, it has submitted candidates for the positions of municipal councilor. The list of candidates was forwarded yesterday to the electoral authority. The statement made by the President of the PCRM, Vladimir Voronin, during the N4 television station show "Puterea a patra".
Asked why PCRM did not put forward a mayoral candidate, Vladimir Voronin answered that the party does not need this. In his opinion, whoever is elected mayor will not be able to effectively govern, because, first of all, the Law on the status of the Chișinău municipality must be revised. "The law has a lot of errors, which leads to a lot of problems. The powers of the mayor and of the Chișinău Municipal Council must be redefined. Once and for all, it has to be clarified what's with the settlements that constitute Chișinău municipality”, said the politician.
The PCRM leader claimed that due to the above reasons, the group has decided to focus on the list of candidates for the functions of municipal councilors. Vladimir Voronin said that the list was initially drafted in alphabetical order, however, during the campaign, the order of candidates on the list will be established based on merit. "All candidates are party members", the politician said.
In the opinion of the PCRM president, Chișinău Municipal Council should have authority over the mayor, not vice versa. Moreover, Vladimir Voronin said that the municipality of Chișinău could turn up having two mayors at the same time. He argues that in the previous elections, the leader of the PPDA, Andrei Năstase, won the popular vote. If the European Court of Human Rights rules that the previous court's decision to invalidate his mandate was incorrect, while another candidate is elected mayor on October 20, then we could find ourselves in an embarrassing situation with two mayors.
In other news, PCRM did not yet complete its candidate selection process for regional mayoralties and local councils.
