Vladimir Voronin asks constituting commission for examining Guma case
The leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin requested creating a commission for the investigation of the case of Democratic MP Valeriu Guma, who was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by a Bucharest court, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Head of Parliament Marian Lupu replied that everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence, while the head of the Democratic faction Dumitru Diacov advised the Communist MPs to be concerned about the defections from their group rather than the case of Valeriu Guma as they will deal with it themselves.
Valeriu Guma was sentenced to four years in jail for corruption. He was accused of trying to bribe the head of the Law Division of the Authority for State Assets Recovery so that a company in which he owned shares was privatized. The Bucharest Court of Appeals quashed the decision of the Tribunal, which earlier put him on two years’ probation, and gave a new punishment to him. According to the Romanian press, Valeriu Guma will not be jailed until a final decision is passed. The MP’s lawyer appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice, which is the highest court in Romania.
