The leader of the Communists Party Vladimir Voronin, in a meeting held to commemorate the soldiers killed during the Iasi-Chisinau operation of August 1944, said the Alliance for European Integration is providing the special forces – the police and the Security and Information Service – with military equipment and Kalasnikov guns because they are concerned about the population's growing dissatisfaction with the fact that pressing problems remained unsolved, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Communist leader also spoke about the scandal involving businessman Vlad Plahotniuc. According to Voronin, this is a kind of settling of accounts between two groups – of Premier Vlad Filat and of the Democrat leader Marian Lupu. “They started to quarrel about who is taller and more handsome and who has more chances of becoming head of state,” he said. Referring to the results of the recent IMAS poll, Vladimir Voronin said he does not believe these polls because they were commissioned and the results were foreseeable. In a news conference on August 23, IMAS manager general Doru Petrutzi said that while carrying out the poll they were phoned and intimidated by persons who represent political parties. Earlier in July, Vladimir Voronin said he possessed information that the government was preparing to use “armored vehicles and automatic weapons” against potential demonstrators, “defenders of democracy”. Asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the statements, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel said he thinks the situation in Moldova will not degenerate dramatically in the following period. “I believe the reasonable politicians will prevail in this country and the crisis will be solved by democratic means,” he said. The Moldovan authorities have not commented on Vladimir Voronin's statements.
