Vladimir Cebotari: Antagonization of parties and society weakens not only political class, but also state

The antagonization of the political forces and society in general weakens considerably not only the political class, but also the economy and other elements of the state. There are particular persons who benefit from this and in time these should be exposed so that society knows what has happened, vice president of the Democratic Party, MP Vladimir Cebotari stated in the public debate “Peaceful transfer of power: reasons, conditions and consequences – the domestic factor” organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova. According to him, society was powerfully divided and not necessarily based on problems or criteria related to the social and economic life. This antagonization was orchestrated by ‘engineers’ who are not mandatorily in Moldova or from the country.

Vladimir Cebotari said the current transfer of power took place peacefully, but the process was somehow jeopardized and a lot of political maturity was needed from the party that was ruling to ensure the peaceful transfer. It happened because of the antagonization of political forces. “This process has lasted for years, I think since 2011. This antagonization initially occurred as part of a struggle, especially of two parties that formed a coalition at that moment. It went to the personal relationship of two leaders. This antagonization destroyed and created government coalitions and that partnership survived politically until 2015, when one of the leaders of the ruling parties was removed and the Democratic Party remained the only party that decided the political affairs even if it was ruling together with another party. That party soon left the government. The PDM remained the only political target of the whole political opposition,” stated the vice president of the PDM.

According to him, it is evident that all the political opponents looked for different reasons to grow their political capital, to make themselves visible and entered the struggle for power. “From our viewpoint, things that we hope will not repeat occurred. Society was powerfully divided and not necessarily according to problems, criteria related to the social and economic life. This antagonization was orchestrated by ‘engineers’ who are not mandatorily in Moldova or from the country. It had concrete persons and exact interests behind. We hope this antagonization will stop with the transfer of power, now that the PDM is no longer managed by the person who was the main target of antagonization,” noted Vladimir Cebotari.

He also said that the process of dividing the political class witnessed different public manifestations of the opposition that ended with particular requests that were often satisfied by the PDM, the opposition being thus heard.

The Democratic heavyweight noted that as long as the parties are in the opposition, they can speculate a lot, but when they are in power they should assume responsibility for their statements. “It is shameful to maintain the temperature and lie in the public sphere,” he stated.

“Each struggle should end with peace. We had the maturity to take a step aside, to come to Parliament and to start to criticize constructively, judiciously so as to have legislative work of a high quality. We will probably criticize harshly, but constructively so as to improve the bills under examination or the policies that the government will try to adopt. I think it’s time to build, not to destroy.”

As to the firings in the new Government, the MP said the dismissed people now remained without a job and without a source of livelihood and this is disrespect.

Vladimir Cebotari noted it is too early to draw conclusions as to the political changes that occurred in the recent past. The government coalition is very diverse, but will aim to remain in power as long as possible. Most probably, the people in the immediate period will continue to watch a show and the published government program also shows that the government prepared a show. “I would like to believe that the government will design projects and will not stop the ongoing ones that are important for the people as they will enable to keep particular economic growth paces. We hope the state institutions will not be weakened by these struggles and shows,” he said.

Representatives of the Shor Party and the Party of Socialists were also invited to the debate, but the invitations remained unanswered.

The public debate “Peaceful transfer of power: reasons, conditions and consequences – the domestic factor” is the 11th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through public debates” that are held with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
