The bridge that will connect Ungheni in the Republic of Moldova to Ungheni in Romania could bear the symbolic name of "Union Bridge", said Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea. According to the official, the technical project has already been completed, and the construction permit is to be issued, IPN reports.
The construction of the bridge will take into account the integration of specific Romanian ethno-traditional elements, which will reflect the common identity and strengthen the symbolism of the union between the two banks of the Prut.
"We are talking about nine bridges in total. The most advanced bridge, obviously, is the Union Bridge from Ungheni to Ungheni. It is symbolic for the Romanians on both banks of the Prut because, in 1991, the Flower Bridge started there," Minister Bolea said in the program "Emphasis on Today" on TVR Moldova channel.
The minister is confident that the bridge will be completed within the planned timeframe. "At the pace followed by the construction companies in Romania, I think it will go well. Now we are working on the issuance of the building permit and the urban planning certificate for the construction on the segment situated in the Republic of Moldova," said Vladimir Bolea.
Under the agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, signed in September 2024, the Ungheni-Ungheni Bridge is an important part of the Union Highway, which is to connect the cities of Târgu Mureș, Iasi, Ungheni and Chisinau. The total value of the project is €33 million and the bridge is to be finished in 2026.
