The state-owned enterprise "Moldova’s Railways" (CFM) could be divided into two joint-stock companies. Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Bolea said that the current form of organization generates losses and it is appropriate to have two separate entities, one that will manage the railway infrastructure and the other will manage the transport of goods and passengers, IPN reports.

The official explained that in all developed states, the railway infrastructure is managed by the state, while the transport of goods and passengers is managed by private economic agents.

"Infrastructure is a strategic element in which the state invests and where it subsidizes. But rail freight transport must become competitive. It must be more digitized and less bureaucratized," Vladimir Bolea said in the program "Openly" on the public television channel.

The minister also said that in order to help the management of the CFM to pay salaries to the 4,800 employees, the Government offers the enterprise diesel fuel from the state reserve.

"Now the CFM is paying the salaries for September. In order for them to have more money available, we decided to take diesel fuel from the state reserve so that they can work, so that they can earn money and a livelihood," said Vladimir Bolea.

The minister explained that the company's debts accumulated due to the sudden drop in freight transport. According to official data, only 4% of the total freight in 2024 was transported by rail.

"In 2024, the CFM transported 4% of total goods. And it does not go to transit. I am talking about our domestic production that was exported or it goes to transport within the country," said the official.

Vladimir Bolea explained that increasing the amount of goods transported by rail is the authorities’ priority as rail transport is considered less expensive and more environmentally friendly than road transport.
