Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The two officials discussed the Agriculture Solidarity and Development Fund, which aims to support farmers affected by natural disasters and climate change. The Deputy Premier referred to the letters he sent to all EU member states, requesting support for this fund. According to the minister, Moldovan agriculture needs a strong partnership with the European Union to face the growing climate challenges, IPN reports.

Vladimir Bolea informed the European official about the critical situation experienced by the agricultural sector due to the severe drought and heat in the summer of 2024, which caused major decreases in agricultural production and generated serious economic difficulties for Moldovan farmers, especially grain producers. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that EU support is needed not only to ensure the continuity of agricultural production in the Republic of Moldova, but also to contribute to the modernization and resilience of the agricultural sector, through investments in agricultural infrastructure, technologies and sustainable solutions.

“A special topic was also the very good cooperation between the Moldovan and European health authorities, through which the Republic of Moldova managed to align itself with the European requirements and to start these days the first exports of poultry meat and eggs to the European Union. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the European Union for the support provided so far and stressed the need to continue this cooperation in order to protect and develop the agricultural sector that is so important for the country’s economy and stability,” reads a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The discussions were held during the visit paid by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to Chisinau.
