Vlad Filat: Soroca, Cahul, Ungheni and Orhei must be municipalities

“I think that Soroca and towns like Cahul, Ungheni and Orhei, from geographic point of view and from a social-economic one, must have statuses of municipalities”, Prime Minister Vlad Filat told an interview with the national news agency Moldpres. The Prime Minister said that this is in line with the Government’s vision on the decentralization reform. “This is why the requests of local authorities of these towns, if they follow the legal norms, will find the necessary support from the Government”, he added. Vlad Filat recalled that the Strategy for decentralization was published on July 13 in the Official Gazette. Currently, the Action Plan for the implementation of the strategy is being carried out. “One of the Plan’s provisions refers to raising several towns of national importance to municipalities, for developing centers of economic growth. The term limit for the implementation of the Action Plan is 2014 and once it is finalized, we’ll be able to say that we have overcome many of problems currently faced by local administration”, said Vlad Filat. On August 10, the Soroca town councilors voted to initiate the procedure for changing the status of Soroca into “town of national importance”.
