Vlad Filat: Situation in Crimea will not repeat in Transnistria

Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, former Prime Minister Vlad Filat does not believe that what happened in Crimea can repeat in the Transnistrian region of Moldova. He spoke about the issue in the program “Moldova Live” on Moldova 1 channel, IPN reports.

“We must be calm and organize our activities so as to prevent unwanted actions and to have prompt reactions in a situation or another. Certain limits can be exceeded, but I don’t think things will go so far,” said Vlad Filat.

As to the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, Vlad Filat said not enough was done in three years, but the talks were resumed after a hiatus of six years. “It’s better to hold negotiations than to have frozen relations. We cannot solve this problem by ourselves. We managed to internationalize the process of informing in detail about the situation on the left bank of the Nistru River,” said the Liberal-Democratic leader.

The former Premier also said that Chisinau should continue the dialogue and should soon pass to the ‘third basket’, which concerns the status of Moldova’s Transnistrian region.

Asked what Chisinau will do if the Moldovan-administered Latin-script schools in Transnistria will not open on September 1, Vlad Filat said the negotiation process is permanent and, even if there is no solution in this respect, there is hope that the schools will continue to work.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18 signed the document providing that Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula will be joined to the Russian Federation.
