The problems experienced by Banca de Economii (BEM) didn’t appear in 2009. A lot of problems faced by the banking system in general and the Communist government in particular overlapped in the case of the BEM, including the lending to companies that cannot pay back loans of about 300 million lei, the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat said in a news conference, quoted by IPN.
Vlad Filat said that during the rule of the Communists the BEM released loans to the Chisinau International Airport, Moldova’s Railways and the cognac factory “Aroma” and now the money cannot be recovered. Also, the BEM was made responsible for the bankruptcy of Investprivatbank.
“It is a long-lasting problem. The found solution was not the best, but was the only one possible. We should not forget that this solution was adopted by the votes of the parliamentary majority as a result of a complex investigation conducted by the commission of inquiry headed by Communist MP Oleg Reidman,” said Vlad Filat.
He underlined that the opposition wanted the BEM to go bankrupt. But the government made everything possible to save the bank and to help it develop.
As to the concession of the Chisinau International Airport, the leader of the PLDM said that for the ordinary people not who won the contest to lease out the airport is important, but the quality of the services provided for them. The modernization of the airport is required by the agreement signed with the EU as it must provide the infrastructure asked by the European partners. Investments of €240 million are needed for the purpose.
