Vlad Filat: Negotiations will not be based on blackmailing

The chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat said that, together with the leaders of the Liberal Party (PL) and the Democratic Party (PDM), he made very clear statements about their views on the country’s development. He ruled out the possibility that the negotiations on the creation of the government coalition will be based on blackmailing, IPN reports.

In an interview for the newspaper “Timpul”, Vlad Filat referred to a statement of former Prime Minister Ion Sturza, who said that the Party of Communists (PCRM) could be used as a blackmailing piece if the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu has too high demands for creating the parliamentary majority. “I would ask those who want this country to have a bright future to refrain from making forecasts in the period. They should better help us than hinder us. I always start on an optimistic note as, otherwise, we could formulate apocalyptic scenarios,” said the politician, adding that he does not believe in a coalition with the PCRM, even if Mihai Ghimpu demands unconditionally that Dorin Chirtoaca should be named Prime Minister.

Referring to the possibility of the PL demanding that Dorin Chirtoaca should head the Government, Vlad Filat said every citizen has the right to elect and to be elected. “We will discuss and will see. The PLDM considers that Iurie Leanca should be offered a new term in office,” he stated.

The Liberal-Democratic leader also ruled out the possibility of early elections. “The early elections would mean a disaster. I do not refer only to the danger of a more massive involvement of Russia, but also to the situation in which Moldova is now. One more election campaign is too much. I don’t know if the country can resist such developments,” he stated.

Asked if the post of head of state is being negotiated, Vlad Filat said it’s absurd to have such discussions until the end of the President’s tenure in 2016, but the PLDM will demand that the Constitution should be amended so that the head of state is elected directly by the people.

On December 4, the three pro-European parties – the PLDM, PDM and PL – announced that an agreement on the creation of a pro-European parliamentary majority was reached.
