Vlad Filat: Moldovans regard European integration as a recipe for a prosperous state
“The Moldovan citizens regard the European integration as a recipe that will help us build a prosperous, democratic and European state. I'm sure it is because of this thing too that Moldova's population supports the path to European integration more than the people of other countries neighboring the EU. More than 70% of the our citizens want Moldova to join the EU,” Prime Minister Vlad Filat said during the hearing held at the European Parliament on June 9, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the press service of the Government.
“The people's support enabled us to make progress in strengthening democracy and political pluralism during the about nine months in power,” Vlad Filat said. Speaking about the constitutional crisis, the Premier said the government coalition identified a solution to it that is supported by the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission.
Vlad Filat stressed that the efforts made by the Government to accelerate the reforms are hindered by the Transnistrian conflict. He said the foreign partners provide support in this respect, mentioning especially the attitude and steps taken by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the Moldovan people's wish to move freely throughout the EU. “The Moldovan citizens do not yet benefit from this privilege, but I hope they will enjoy it in the near future. We know we have a lot to do to achieve this desideratum. Therefore, we aim to establish close relations with the EU so as to together solve the problems that impede the elimination of visas,” he said.
The hearing themed “Republic of Moldova: one year since the pro-European shift” was organized by the Group of the European People's Party.
