The head of the Liberal-Democratic faction Vlad Filat said that the current parliamentary session begins in an atmosphere that he cannot describe as he cannot find a suitable adjective. In his speech at the beginning of the first sitting of the autumn-winter session of Parliament, the Lib-Dem said the situation is serious, IPN reports.
“I ask myself why a Parliament elected in a democratic way is surrounded and protected by a police cordon. What is there left of democracy? Is democracy itself besieged! Democracy is ultimately a rather simple principle. An elected majority rules, but listens to and protects the minority and all those who have opposite opinions. But when one of these players wants to force another player keep silent, democracy becomes virtual. In this case, it is really dead,” stated Vlad Filat.
The MP noted that when democracy fails, it is replaced by chaos. “Do we really want to assume this risk? Is it what the people expect from us? I don’t think so. I’m even convinced of the opposite. It’s not about denial of the problems as these exist and are very real. We, regretfully, are very late in proposing concrete solutions to these,” he said.
Vlad Filat also said in Moldova there is no place for the populism of those who serve the interests of a foreign power and whose objective is to annihilate all the democracy efforts aimed at bringing Moldova in the EU. “My conviction is simple: if it’s not possible to reform the country, we should rebuild it. Let’s rebuild Moldova. We must correct the made mistakes and must impose values in which we believe, in all the areas, inclosing the most sensitive ones,” stated the politician.
He said that he is often asked if Moldova is a European country or, worse, if Moldova is indeed European. “It took me some time to find the clearest and most comprehensive answer. Yes, Moldova is 100% European if we speak about the development model to which it aspires. From this perspective, Moldova’s integration into the EU is a fact that cannot be negotiated. This will become a reality,” stated the Lib-Dem, noting that the mandate given to them by the people is a clear one and their task is to put it to good use until the next elections.
