Vlad Filat: If I open parenthesis, I risk blowing up whole Moldovan politics

The chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat said that after the possible early parliamentary elections, the power will most probably be taken over by the left. The pro-European parties are now in a crisis of image and he admits to this. As to the causes, the politician said he will speak about them some other time as, if he opens the parenthesis now, he risks blowing up the whole Moldovan politics. “Time will come yet. Now it is important to understand that when the pro-European parties face a crisis of image and when there is no alternative on the right, the left can easily win the early elections. This would definitely mean the change of the country’s foreign development course,” Vlad Filat said in an interview for the portal Tribuna, quoted by IPN.

Asked about a possible merger of the Democratic Party and the Party of Communists, the politician said such a merger is discussed through the angle of the early legislative elections and it’s not about the mandate of the current alliance. “I fear that the equation that prefigures other political commitments and mergers would count less. That’s why we must now concentrate on what we have to do and our mission is very clear – we must ensure political stability, maintain the current ruling alliance and continue Moldova’s integration into the EU,” stated the politician.

He said he would like all the MPs of the ruling alliance to realize the historical importance of the moment we live and understand that they were voted by the people who want a European future and have no right to show disrespect to the people and to use the seat of MP to achieve current goals.

As to the press suppositions that if one more MPs withdraws from the ruling alliance, the group headed by Iurie Leanca could be co-opted into power, Vlad Filat said that if such a situation is reached, this will be a real test for Iurie Leanca as this will have to show what he really wants – the country’s European integration or administrative instruments and posts. “The European integration can be supported both conditionally and unconditionally,” he stated

As regards the protests, the Liberal-Democratic leader said a clear difference should be made between them. On the one hand, there are the protests mounted by a civic platform, which mobilized the people who are dissatisfied with the socioeconomic situation. On the other hand, there are the protests staged by the forces of the left.  “I would divide these protests into: 1) protests that pursue internal goals and 2) protests that pursue external geopolitical goals. Those of the second category worry me the most,” he stated, adding that he has no connection with the protests organized by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth”.
