Vlad Filat: Early legislative elections are inevitable

Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), said the early parliamentary elections are inevitable. He stated that the date of the elections will be announced after the parliamentary parties reach a consensus about the modification of article 78 of the Constitution, which describes the procedure for electing the head of state, Info-Prim Neo reports. Filat said the Alliance for European Integration will make a choice between early elections and a referendum and will announce its decision in the nearest future. “Our country's objectives are very clear. The situation is as clear,” the Premier said, adding that Moldova will take into account the recommendations made by the Venice Commission. “The constitutional reform is a broader objective that we must achieve over time. The modification of article 78 of the Constitution is required at the current stage. We must jointly agree on the date of the elections. The political parties should argue, not engage the society in this battle,” the leader of the PLDM said. If it is decided that the head of state will be elected by the people, the modification will take effect after the early legislative elections.
