Vlad Filat: Clear option in foreign policy becomes existential

Ex-Premier Vlad Filat calls on the Moldovan political class and society to clearly define the foreign policy option and the geopolitical orientation, also because these will define the state’s domestic policy. “The parameters we will set, from the cultural and identity ones to the system, economic and military ones, will be influenced by this option that we must choose not only at the level of the political class, but also and especially at the level of citizens,” Vlad Filat posted on a social networking site, being quoted by IPN.

He formulated such proposals in the context of the global transformations determined by the COVID-19 pandemic and of the unfavorable situation in which Moldova found itself after being earlier also affected by serious problems.

“The Republic of Moldova is slowly, but steadily moving towards a chaos generated by the pandemic that affected almost all the countries and also by the weakness of a political and institutional system that cannot cope with an economic crisis that will restructure the new global architecture. The strategic uncertainty established in the international system will last rather long and its effects cannot be anticipated for now,” wrote Vlad Filat.

According to him, for the Republic of Moldova, with a fragile economy that depends on a lot of things, such as natural resources, markets and technology, with a scaring security shortage, the necessity of a clear option in the foreign policy becomes existential.

“A clear foreign policy, finally geopolitical option will define our internal policy. The parameters we will set, from the cultural and identity ones to the system, economic and military ones, will be influenced by this option that we must choose not only at the level of the political class, but also and especially at the level of citizens. A clear geopolitical option will mandatorily require a profound reform of the state, including a new constitution that would reflect the kind of state we want to have and towards which we will be heading. Time comes when the political class of the Republic of Moldova should overcome our proverbial infantilism and provincialism. Alone we will not manage anything and the crisis in the healthcare sector proved this, showing also who our friends are,” said the former Prime Minister.

“I had headed the Government of the Republic of Moldova for almost four years, with ups and downs, with mistakes I assume and also with small victories and I’m convinced that if we know what we want, we will succeed. It’s time to take a decision ourselves before others decide for us!”.
