Vlad Filat asks to be tried publicly

Ex-Premier Vlad Filat called on civil society and the European institutions to demand that the hearings in his case should take place publicly. The call was published on his Facebook page, IPN reports.

“Two weeks beforehand, my remand detention was extended for another 30 days: based on the same irrelevant, unsubstantiated reasons that were ostentatiously announced by the prosecutor in a closed-door hearing, in a ‘court case’ that is actually political lynching and nothing more. They say there is evidence. If there are proofs, why shouldn’t the people see and hear them?” wrote Vlad Filat.

The politician wonders why the prosecutor refuses to accept to make the trial public. “The reason is very simple: if the hearings are public, the people will see what actually happened in the banking system and who the real heroes are. They say that I influence the investigation when I’m fully isolated, when the trial is not public, when I do not have access to the press and have no instruments at all. How and with what can I influence? All the witnesses for the prosecution were already questioned before judges. Who and what can I still influence? I want to note a very important detail – almost all the prosecution witnesses are investigated in other or similar cases that are deal with by the prosecutor. They all can be blackmailed by the prosecution,” reads the message.

Vlad Filat requests civil society and the European institutions to demand public proceedings. “Demand this, not for me as they suggested to me that the sentence was already passed. The people have the right to know what is going on in this ‘orchestrated show”, especially because there are many important details about which they do not speak before the press, while I’m pushed by policemen with balaclavas so that I manage to say nothing,” he wrote.

The ex-Premier also wrote that Banca de Economii represents the biggest problem within the ‘theft of the century’, but of the 13.5 billion lei, about 6 billion lei went to this bank, while the difference to Banca Sociala and UNIBANK. The state institutions did nothing to prevent the fraud. Nothing is said and done in this case because those who investigate it do not want the truth to come out.

Filat also said that the decision to take out a loan from Banca de Economii was made with the aim of not losing the depositors. He voiced hope that the Kroll 2 report will be made public so that the people know what really happened from this company, not from those who took part in the theft.

Vlad Filat faces 7 to 15 years in jail and ban on holding public posts for influence peddling and passive corruption. He pleads not guilty.
