Vitalie Gamurari: Political class should reach consensus

The Moldovan politicians represent the real state in society and this applies not only to Moldova. The political class should realize that it should not bring politicians from abroad, but should reach a consensus, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Moldova Vitalie Gamurari said in the public debate “Quality of the political class: importance, current state and ways of improvement” that was held by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova. He noted that the promotion of young people and new persons in politics will be to Moldova’s benefit.

“The truth is that the people lost confidence in politicians during 26 years. I don’t say that those who are in power or in the opposition are perfect, but the attempt to reach a consensus was made at least by the Democratic Party during the past year and a half. It tries to be open to dialogue and to be appreciated by the people. This is a condition by which the political class in Moldova could change in the future. I mean quantitatively and qualitatively as well,” stated Vitalie Gamurari.

He noted that they say an authoritarian regime was established in Moldova, but if this was true, no debates would be held, including on problems faced by society. “The criticism leveled at the government by the opposition is a good thing. We are ready for debates and the political class will change as a result of these because it is impossible to prevent the coming of new politicians,” stated the PDM’s spokesman.

As the representative of the PDM, which is responsible for governance, Vitalie Gamurari noted they often say that the justice sector is captured. “I want to say that before taking up as a spokesman, I served with the Disciplinary Board of the Superior Council of Magistracy and know that there are many judges who are correct and do their job honestly,” he stated.

Vitalie Gamurari also referred to the assertions that the political parties in the Republic of Moldova are often like limited liability companies and this is a problem that should be overcome. In comparison with the European states, Moldova has yet a lot to do to ensure political maturity and the discussions and debates inside the political class can bring benefits in this regard.

He spoke about the conciliation form adopted by the English and Irish people during the civil war in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, when no one believed that the sides can hold talks. Then, the Irish politicians were those who sat at the negotiating table with the English people and said they are ready to give up their political careers in exchange for peace and a bright future for their people.

“We should do the same. We should come to terms every time in an attempt to be open to dialogue and to be later appreciated by the people. It is the people who will assess our work, not we,” stated the PDM’s spokesman.

The public debate “Quality of the political class: importance, current state and ways of improvement” was the 78th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
