Visas for Moldovans near Romanian border could be lifted by yearend
The Small-scale Border Traffic Convention between Moldova and Romania, which will enable the Moldovans living not father than 50 kilometers from the Romanian border to travel to the neighboring country without a visa, could be signed by the end of this year, announced Moldova’s Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca at the meeting of the Government on Saturday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Government adopted Saturday a decision to launch negotiations with the Romanian side in this regard.
Under the convention, the Moldovans living in the border zone will be able to travel to Romania with a one-year permit, instead of a visa, which can be prolonged depending on the conduct of the bearer.
Leanca said talks will also be held to open Romanian consulates in north and south Moldova, as well as a Moldovan consulate in the Romanian city of Iasi. Negotiations on this issue could end by Monday.
Leanca went on to add that the start of negotiations was possible due to the recent meeting between Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Romanian President Traian Basescu.
Negotiations on the signing of the Small-scale Border Traffic Convention had been delayed for several years by the previous government, which demanded that the so-called Basic Treaty be signed first.
